So I've been searching the web recently for some guitar/flute duets to play with my girlfriend (who, surprise surprise, plays the flute), but to no avail. Is anyone aware of any good public domain/free duets of this sort out there? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I don't think that you need to look for music that has been specially set for that combination. Flutes are "C instruments" so you should be able to play off the same sheet without needing to find separately transposed parts. Most songbooks give a melody line and a rhythm part. If you took the rhythm part on guitar then the flute should be able to play the part usually taken by lead or singer. That should work shouldn't it?

Flautist James Galway had a hit with John Denver's "Annie's Song" and, at a guess, there would be a heap of Denver tunes that would work with a flute/guitar combination. Ian Anderson of the band Jethro Tull played flute too, so they might be worth a look. I'd think that most Folk or Country type tunes would work OK with flute and guitar, but don't see why you couldn't have a crack at just about anything. Maybe I've missed the point here... But good luck tracking something down. There seem to be a few sites with traditional non-copyrighted music around too. So as long as you're not narrowing your search by insisting that it specifically mentions flute and guitar, then you should be OK.

Cheers,

Chris

A few years ago I was working on a flute/guitar arrangement, and I bought the book "Flute And Guitar Duets For Any Occasion" as a "research" item...it's on Amazon and SheetMusicPlus, though I can't recall much about the book itself.

I've just come back from my niece's senior honors recital on the flute. One 5-movement concerto by Handel, I think, made me want to gator in the aisle.

(Yeah, right. My wife kept poking me to straighten up before I snored. Wish the girl would learn some Marshall Tucker or Jethro Tull stuff!)

She really is good at what she does, though!

A little over 10 years ago, I hired a guitar/flute duo to play Mendelson's Wedding March.

It sounded very nice.

Umm .. Stairway To Heaven? I know it was likely played on a keyboard but it is a flute voice isn't it?

That's a good point Chris. I was thinking more along the lines of classical arrangements, but if I broaden my horizons a bit, there probably are a lot of good lead lines that I could throw on top of guitar.

Doug, I saw that book when I was looking around too. It seemed pretty quality, so I might have to give it a shot too.

And TR, that's a great call. I actually was in Dublin a few weekends ago, and I picked up an Irish tin-whistle, and that was the first thing I learned to play on it  Nothing matches that sound!

Thanks all!

Well I knew it sounded like something with air going through a tube.

"Nights In White Satin" - Moody Blues. Should be easy enough to work out for acoustic guitar and flute, especially as those were the instruments used on the recording. If my memory serves me correctly, I think Dogsbody tabbed it out for the Easy Song Database.
