The infamous YouTube phenom Jawmunji (just trying to embarrass him...) has started putting together a database of fingerstyle players.

In his words:

a “fingerstyle database”, which would contain all the fingerstyle guitarists that we have got something out of listening to, so that we could share our discoveries with others."

As is normal with Jaw... he is not doing this for profit... just for the fingerstyle community.

His Blog entry about it...

A good resource for a ton of fingerstyle arrangements!

Ha, the default sorting is by date added. Everyone gets to be #1 for at least as long as it takes until the next player is added and you get moved down the list! :)

Database is ticking along, currently (Dec 2010) gets about 35 views per day, 40 players in the database. Two other guys are actively involved moderating players so it's not just me, phew!

Had a bit of positive feedback, people (including myself) finding players that we really liked that otherwise would have never found. That's the goal of the thing.

Perhaps in time it will grow to be a big useful resource, perhaps it will fade into obscurity. Hard to say. As with anything internet, if there are people who are active with it, and it has the ability for users to make changes keeping it fresh, evolving; then who knows, sky's the limit!

If it goes well there is a next step I would possibly undertake, to start databasing songs of fingerstyle arrangements. Fully sortable, links to the player database...you have a song in mind...go to the fingerstyle song database, see all the different arrangements, links to a video, all the stuff you would expect. A different concept - the player database is about discovering players and enjoying what they play, this is the other direction, with a song in mind seeing what fingerstylers have done with it.

A lot of work both coding wise and in populating the database - not something I would take on until the world is crying out for it! :)

I like the idea!!

There are in fact some players that I would have never found, and I know that there are people that have found me that never would, so I really enjoy it, and there is alot of good arrangements being shared there!
