I'd say one of the most popular effects for funk guitar would be a Wah-Wah pedal. Play some funky chords & rock that Wah like there's no tomorrow! 8)

Yeah, wah should be your #1 effect. Autowah also funks it up pretty nicely. I was listening to some Funkadelic today and I noticed that they also use a lot of reverb (maybe a little chorus too?). Treble is also key in funk music, you want to biting kind of upper range sound.

The rhythm is the thing that makes it funky tho.

a fuzz or distort pedal can be helpful combined with if your amp doesn't distort much, if you want that kind of screetchy, staticy wah feel.

compression can be useful, it's hard to describe, you just have to try it out. I also like a phase shifter but that's usaully an effect used on with electric guitar.

I got lucky with Mr.Funk. I had just received my new issue of Vintage Guitar magazine and there was a cool article about him. it also had some Tabs.
Ive always loved James Brown.when he hit the music charts big time I as in junior high. all the dances we went to had R and B bands with horns. we did our James Brown moves (LOL). I was earning guitar and mimed the cool black guys playing their axes. funky stuff. I loved it. still do.

I also learned that in replying to posts it helps to spend a bit of time Googling. a posted link had helped me in the past. so now I try to add one if it is relevant.

and funk is very relevant.
Im sure glad you liked the link.

Compressor. I've never heared a single funk song where the guitar did not have compression. Wah is used often too.

I use a little light chorus when I play funky stuff. EQ pedal to get the extra treble. Also, the Seymour Duncan pickup booster is a good one if you would want to play electric funk and have decent pups.

Who needs a signature?
I mean really...
It's almost always lyrics...
or a cliche...
or garbage about me...

you can play funk on any instrument. it is all attitude and rythtym.
your effect choice is up to you.

for effects. I would not use heavy distortion. other than that it is up to you and what sound you think you can work.
