I am looking for a gig bag for my MIM telecaster and Epi Sheridan. I have a hard shell case but it is a drag lugging the case to and from lessons in the back of my car. Does anyone have any recommendations? Don't want to be spend too much. :D

Funny, my Faded SG came with a gig bag but I'm thinking of buying a case for it. Gig bags are really not that great because they afford very little protection for the guitar. To me it's easier to carry a case with a handle than a gig bag that flops around. I do carry the guitar on my back at times.

You can find all sorts of nice gigbags on sites like Musicians Friend or other sites. I would make sure to get a well padded bag. Read the reviews that will give you the best idea of the quality of the bag.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. I have always purchased hardshell cases for all of my electrics and acoustic guitars but I was hoping for something easy and light. I guess you can't have everything (and why not  !). I did run across the following that might solve the problem.

Anyone have one of these?

Wes, I was looking for a hard case to replace the gig bag that came with my son's faded SG and I ran across this at MF:

It looks like a pretty good deal for $40. He's only going to lug it back and forth to lessons though, I'm not sure if it would hold up to regular gigging. Most hard cases in this price range are not much better than cardboard, but this one says "5-ply wood construction". I may give it a shot.

I have something similar for one of my basses. For light use around town or for going to lessons, it's perfectly adequate and the side pockets are convenient.

My main worry is that the zipper will one day give out, and I'd prefer a latch system of some kind. But, it is what it is.

LOL, right after I posted earlier I actually ordered that exact case tonight. :D

I've been meaning to do it for awhile. I ordered one of the Musician's Friend cases for my Squier 51 and it is really pretty nice, although it is not an exact fit, the guitar can move around a little. I got this one:

MF Guitar Case

I put a piece of soft foam to keep the guitar in place. I haven't tried it with other guitars.

For the money they are pretty good cases.

I bought a nice generic red and black thick padded bag at guitar center for about 40$ a year ago.

Most maple-necked guitars are pretty tough hombres -- I've got no problem using gig bags for them, and generally do these days despite have cases for many of them. But if I consider a LP or an SG, both have mahogany necks that'll snap due to their own mass if they fall over. Won't put those in a gig bag and toss in the back seat.

So it looks like I will transport the Tele in a bag to my lessons and keep my Sheraton in its hardcase. The Sheraton weighs a ton, but because of its semi-hollow body and neck, it sounds like it will be best keeping it in its hardcase. Thanks for all the valuable information. :)

My Epiphone Masterbilt came with a "Soft-Hard" case that was sort of like that. It's very light and it seems very sturdy. The material is sort of like a styrofoam cooler covered in canvas. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it is VERY bulky! Of course, mine is for an acoustic. It's lighter than a hard case, but it is way bigger. I bought a cheap used hard case and stuck this one in the attic.

I have that very case and have found it to be great for all my needs. I'm no regular gigger but for lessons and to friends homes for some jamming it's been fine. I would caution though that not all my gits fit in this case. My Schecter is fine, but Agile LP is a no go. My Reverend will squeeze in but I don't like putting that much pressure on the headstock. I'd take some measurements and compare just to be sure.

I have a Musician's Friend case, the Les Paul one, and it is a very good case at a bargain price. I also have several Musician's Friend gig bags and they are bang for the buck. Thick padding and lots of pockets for a cheap price. I have a fender gig bag that is just that, a bag. No padding at all. it's a nice dust cover. :?
My Gibson gig bag isn't bad though. Here is the MF bag I buy.

I had purchased a Epiphone Masterbilt guitar and it came with a "rigid gigbag." It's like between a hardcase and a gigbag.
This bag is really great, it's lightweight, even comes with straps to turn it into a backpack. It even has a built-in hygrometer.
It used to be that the only way you could get this gigbag was to buy the guitar, but now the Masterbilts don't come with the gigbag, so I am assuming you can buy it separately. Anyway, that's what a customer rep at Gibson told me.
The Masterbilt series is all acoustics, so they might not have one to fit electrics.

I got the hardshell case from Musician's Friend about a week ago, and I am 100% satisfied. My SG fits perfect it it, and it has a nice big pocket inside for my strap and guitar cord. Seems very durable and is pretty attractive too. :D

It has very thick but soft cushioning inside top and bottom. Very nice.

The latches seem loose without the guitar in it, but with the guitar inside they are very snug.

For the low price it is a real bargain.

I just placed an order for one last night (after I caught my son resting his SG in it's gig bag with the headstock against the wall  ). I thought that MF would ship free if the order was over $100, but I looked yesterday and it says, "$29.00 and over is FREE*"! Sweet. I can't just order one item from MF, so I also got a side order of Fish and Chips.
