What is the difference between hard rock and shred (if there is at all a difference)?

Generally, I would characterize "Shredding" as an action, Playing lots of notes quickly and precisely. If "shred" is a type of music, I would suspect it was simply a genre that emphasised this technique.
Hard rock is a more encompassing term, the kind that summons images of Godsmack, Chevelle, etc. Hard rock is often more rhythm centered, as opposed to guitar-centered.
