I know what you mean about the rut as I stopped playing guitar for about twelve years because I was doing the same things over and over. Things that worked for me - I re-connected with some old friends and started playing guitar with them - although the songs are familiar I'm trying to take ideas from the lessons here (like embellishments, some lead, and using a capo to play the tune with different chords) to prevent boredom from setting in again. I also found another player who plays bluegrass - something I've never done and it's like learning over again although the frustration level is not as great. Try some fingerpicking exercises from classical music for something different if you're not already into it - I'm not that good at it but the different snippets of melody are encouraging.
