Hi, there is always this sound I hear from the guitar in a lot of songs and I would love to know how to produce it.
Its kinda hard for me to describe it so I'll just link you this song, I am talking about these sounds in the first 20 seconds.
You mean the feedback? Allow Uncle Ted to explain.
OK I'll elaborate. The string is vibrating at a certain pitch. The speaker amplifies this pitch. If the speaker is loud enough and the guitar is close enough the sound from the speaker will vibrate the string at the same pitch even more. This causes a loop, a chain reaction perpetuating the tone til it builds into the sound you hear. There is an art to it. A high pitched squeel like a microphone feeding back is not pleasing to the ear. The lower pitched howl however can be musical. A good guitarist can control this and use it to make music.
Here is a song I did utilizing this technique.

If you have your amp louder this will work better.
1. Have a good amount of distortion on.
2. You can pick a note and then hold it or you can just let it happen if you are loud enough and are not touching your hand to the strings..
3. Face your speaker so that your pick ups on your guitar are facing the speaker.
4. Like I said the louder the better but if you can't have your amp that loud, facing the speakers will make the whole process easier.
5. Try that and get back to me.
together we stand, divided we fall..........
together we stand, divided we fall..........

Some trivia: listen to the very beginning of "I Feel Fine"...The Beatles. I would say that's the very first time this feedback was used deliberately. (The Beatles coming up with "a first", imagine that!)

Cool! I remember watching it when it was first out. Just couldn't find it. I actually recorded my song "Shock Wave" after watching this.
 Did anyone listen? http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1189153&songID=10867912
