I began playing (and attempting to sing) Me and Bobby McGee.

In the lyrics they reference a Harpoon (I seen some text spell it as Harpon).

In Janis Joplin's version:

I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana,
I was playing soft while Bobby sang the blues.

or in Willie Nelson's version:

I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana
And was blowing sad while Bobby sang the blues

What is a Harpoon :?: - is it like a Harmonica or is it another type of musical instrument:?:

yes, it refers to a harmonica imo

The line, "I pulled my Harpoon from my dirty red bandana" can be interpreted 2 ways. The more sanitized version considers the "Harpoon" as a slang word for harmonica. The second interpretation considers it a hypodermic needle, since a bandana was often used to tie off the arm before an addict shot up.
