I am having trouble fingering the E9 chord X76777 so I am looking for some help with how to finger this chord. I'm using my ring to bar the 1-3 index finger on the 4 and middle finger on the 5 but I can't keep my middle finger from muting out the 4 string. I don't know how else to finger this so what can I do to get this chord to work.

That's the standard fingering. You could try moving your second finger so it frets the 5th string more towards the low E... and make sure your thumb is behind the neck and the neck is in proper position.

If you truly find it impossible, play it with the 6th string root (the fifth of the chord):

7
7
7
6
x
7

Ninth chords are often played without the root. :)

While this version is not really much easier ...

e X
B 12
G 11
D 12
A 11
E 12

... many find its rootless version pretty simple, since the fingering pattern resembles the popular dim7 form:

e X
B 12
G 11
D 12
A 11
E X

I play it as

x
7
7
6
7
x

with the middle finger on the 5th string, index on 4th, ring on 3rd string and pinky on 2nd string. This fingering is good since it's similar to how I play E7b9 (x7676x) and E7#9 (x7678x).

Work on getting a pretty good arch on the middle finger. That helps. And rotate your wrist the tiniest bit toward the nut.
It's very useful to be able to catch these 9 chords.

Since it is the E9 you could let the E strings ring

0 open
7 pinkie
7 ring
6 index
7 middle
0 open

but musenfreund gave you the best advice to play it like you wanted to play it.
