Hey all,

I've been having some issues with my fretting hand. Once I start to play anything of any complexity, the muscles in my thumb and the pinky-side of my palm start painfully tightening up. What should I do?

Thanks in advance!

It's most likely that you are learning something new that you're fretting hand is not used to it yet. Take breaks and shake your hand off. Your muscles need time to adapt.

Another thing to note, ease into it. Don't play "up to speed" right away. Start slower, relax and make every note count.

Lots of stuff.
First though, have you injured your hand any time recently?
Just asking because you say that you were attempting to play ANYTHING of ANY complexity.
So, if you have injured your hand, lay off it for a day or two. If it hurts you often, maybe a doctor's visit?
If that's not the case.
Then put your guitar down and do some of those famous hand exercises. I learned them from Guitarnoise's lessons. They really help with things like that.
After doing that, also try running the chromatic scale 3 times.
If it is still hurting after any of this.
Uhhh...
I feel for ya.
