Bear with me here. Im writing a research paper on music censorship in America 1950-Present. Since this is obviously a musical community, I was hoping someone here could give me incidences of this I may have missed or should focus on more than I have. Listing all the information that I have would take a while and Im sure you don't want to read it. So, really, if any of you are aware of obscure (but not so obscure that it looks like Im stretching) incidences, it would be great if you could share them.

Thanks,
Doug

"Who are you" - The Who, almost never gets beeped, which is strange.

"Jet Airliner" - Steve Miller, sometimes it's "funky kicks" and sometimes it's not.

"Money" - Pink Floyd, almost never gets beeped. Must be that "do good feel good" cow manure.

I assume you have the various Beatles songs...

Pets by Porno for Pyros -- also never bleeped, but pretty difficult to understand until one reads the lyrics.

Ed Sullivan tried unsuccessfully to censor The Doors' Light My Fire. Story is here: Doors-Sullivan. Search for "Doors." Another version I heard told of one of Sullivan's minions being furious after the performance, saying "You'll never do the Ed Sullivan Show again." To which one of the Doors replied "We just did the Ed Sullivan Show."

Also note Sullivan's video censorship of Elvis.

Yeah -- that's listed in the same link with the Doors and Elvis stories. Ed was the emcee of what was effectively the largest stage in the US at that time, and he ran things rather heavy-handedly.

Was that censorship or just plain old good taste?

That's a really good question Nick. Maybe not being able to express one's self could be a form of censorship even in bad taste. That left a lot of frustated fans during the ban.

Thanks for making me think on this one.

Ice T - Cop Killer - this was a big to do. Not sure exactly what happened with it.

Don't forget Elvis Presley and his pelvis!

SNL - They must have several. I think Elvis Costello was told he couldn't perform a specific song. He went on stage started playing the rehearsed song and stopped a few beats in and then played the forbidden one anyway.

As sad as this is. I saw one Ashlee Simpson show and they made her change the lyrics to one of her songs to sing it for the Orange Bowl?? Where ever it was that she got booed. Can you believe it, censoring Ashlee Simpson. Didn't know there was anything about her that needed to be censored.

There was a rap group in the early 90's maybe late 80's who was pretty much banned from performing a song - something really over reaching. I can't think of who it is and what the song was!! grr.... It probably is in this website: http://ericnuzum.com/banned/incidents/ I think you'll find just about everything you need there. I clicked on the 90's and I think it is the 2 Live Crew thing - the song was Me So Horny. Because it was made legally obscene I think 2 Live Crew was arrested for performing their music live. Then another band performed 2 Live Crews music and was also arrested. And people were arrested if they sold the album to minors.

It's not easy being green.... good thing I'm purple.

The Elvis Costello song that he sang (against the wishes of Lorne Michaels and company) was Radio Radio.

Apeman by the Kinks never gets bleeped even though it's definitely not "...the air polution is a foggin' up my eyes..." And if you ever hear a version of Lola where the opening uses "and it tastes just like cherry cola" instead of "coca cola," that's a version that was created to get around the BBC censors.

Supernova by Liz Phair is a 50/50 shot of getting bleeped or simply paused.

Peace

In the video and for TV performances, she simply makes a "whatever" face instead of saying f***s. Makes it all the more noticable. I'd like to hear Flower on the radio -- it would set censorship record.
