I finally did it. Rounded out the collection tonight. I've been pondering which semi-hollow or hollow to get. My choices got narrowed down to Gretsch 5122 or 5120, Epi Sheraton II, Casino, Riviera (once they get them back in stock), the B.B. King model and finally the PRS SE Semi. If I was looking for a hot and hard rocker, the PRS would have won, hands down. $515 at GC and simply stunning in every aspect. Wasn't what I was looking for, so I didn't get it. Most of the Epi's just felt and/or sounded too much like things I already have, except for the p-90 equipped Casino and I'm sure the P-90 equipped Riviera. I tried out some Ibanezes, but they never got far in the running. Just did not feel right. Too bad too, as I am a fan of Ibanezes.

The gretsch was never far out of first place. It just feels more solid than any of the others except may the PRS, which was an entirely different beast. It's a monster. Very big, really good accoustic qualities and far enough away from things I already own to stand out. Really nice action. Not too low, not too high and very good down the fret board to boot. This will be my first guitar that I leave the tone control wide open and the volume sweet spot is really high as well. I can understand leaving this one cranked all the way, all the time. It just snaps when you jump on it. Slowing things down, I can get some decent Jazz tones as well. It's got new D'Adds on it, so I'll leave for now. I did buy a set of flat wounds to try out sometime. I'm sure that'll really up the Jazzy sound.

The killer part of this one though, was the price I got it for. Used, but very clean for $425. Kind of too good to pass up.

Pics.

Must be something in the air - one of my adult students got this same model (and color!) about a month ago. It's a great guitar, Roy! Congrats!

When do we get the honor of hearing you?

Peace

I've got a few things I posted in Hear Hear. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=833547 Odd song names to avoid copyright police.
"All I Can Do" = All I Can Do Is Write It In A song" by skynryd
"Not Crying" = "Out Of Tears" by the Stones
"YCAGWYW" = "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the stones.
"no no cry" = "No Woman, No Cry" by Bob Marly
A few more , ahem, gems in there if you haven't gone into bad singing coma or other worse ailments. I'm really don't suggest going to earlier recordings. I've made some headway in the past 8 months or so.

Or, do you mean from this guitar? All's I can say is that'll come soon. I'll explore it tomorrow and the next day to see where it fits. Tonally speaking, so far it can do some Jazz and even some blues. I think it really steps right into some of that rockabilly stuff which I don't play much of until the next few days.

Wow! I wanted something different and I got it. I can't be more pleased, despite initially looking for a Jazzy sounding guitar. (Still thinking I can coax some better Jazz tones than I have so far out of this.)

I just ran through the gamut of some of my favorite clean patches. and even some moderate 70's hard rock. This thing has a definitive quack. It's handled everything fine and still sounded like a Gretsch rather than an multi-effects processor.

It pretty much shines on old school rock and roll. I just ran through a few verses of House Of The Rising Sun, Lola and C'est La Vie (You Never Can Tell) on a clean setting with a tight bite and some reverb to it. Really, really, really nice. Also makes me want to learn some of those spy movie type things Dogbite and others were doing a couple months back. I only know a couple chord progressions for two rock-a-billy songs, but I'll learn the whole songs soon. (Stray Cat Strut and Crazy Little Thing Called Love)

Nice guitar Roy. Crazy little thing called Love is pretty simple probably take all of about 10 minutes to learn that one.

Enjoy the new toy!

Thanks cnev. I have it some where around here in a book. I actually messed with it some not too long ago, but darned if I remember anything but that opening riff with the D chord.

Roy,

If you can't find it I have a tab of it. I think there are like 3 chords. The solo is one of the easiest too. On the record I beleive Brian May used a Tele which at first he said he refused to use.

I just found it in the book and listening now to get the feel. Just the rhythm. I'll probably have the fillers and lead in a GP or PT file or something. If not, I'll PM you for the rest. Thanks! :D
