Went to the flea market yesterday shopping around without any purpose when I saw

a beautifull acoustic cut-away all mahogany guitar.
i asked the man "how much ?"
he said "it's 50$, but for you 40$".
I took the guitar, strummed a few chords, it was out of tune of-course, but
sounded nice and was comfortable to hold. i didn't check it further. Then i saw
a nice "fake antique" big wooden clock with roman numerals.
asked the man "how much ?"
he said "10$ for you 8$".
i told him "the guitar + the clock for 40$".
A little discussion, finally he agreed.
"take the guitar" he told me.
"Where is the gigbag ?" I asked.
he said "the bag is 6$".
"What" I asked him ?, while pulling out the 40$. "all guitars come with gigbag".

So he agreed - 40$ for the guitar+gigbag+clock.

After paying and going home - i thaught - i didn't check anything. surprisingly
the neck was straight, action is like classical guitar, need to lower it a
little. machine heads - are cheap but seems to hold their tune which is enough.
I tuned the guitar and the high e broke. I removed all the strings and here the
fun begins. taking the dust out of it and cleaning it. it took about 2 hours and
almost a bottle of guitar cleaner to clean it inside out. the protective nylon
was still on the pickguard. I removed it. then put back the original strings,
but change the e and b to new ones. tuned it up and on the first strum - man
what a beautifull sound, amazing that cheap guitar sounds wonderfull. It feels
comfortable and playable like a taylor guitar - but this guitar cost me 1% of a
taylor. I know it's probably all laminate guitar. but it sounds good for
strumming and just perfect as a beater guitar to take around.

the ticket inside the guitar and on the headstock says: del monte, valencia and
there is something that looks like a serial number.

ummm, if you went to the trouble taking all the strings off...why would you put 4 of the old ones back on? why not put a whole new set on?

From what you described, the guitar strings most likely have been on there for a long time, so I know the low strings are like a rust color and not even shinny which means the tones are very dual and thuddy. I bet if you replace the old with new you'd realy be amazed. The only good sound your hearing is from the 2 new strings!

That's what I plan to do - change the strings. I'll start with phosphore-bronze or maybe 80/20.
Have to find out what the guitar "likes". if the phosphore will sound good - I'll stop at them.

Bonzo would you put bright or mellow strings on a parlor guitar ?
Nice pic by the way

Oh well Rahul. People say I could have gotten it 5$ less if I kept bargaining, but i was to entusiastic about the guitar.
Maybe, anyway I think i did a good deal and the seller didn't loose too - otherwise he wouldn't sell it...

Thanks to you all.

well - I've put on it silk & steel - it was unbalanced - too much treble and too much bass.
I changed to phophore-bronze - too loud.
Changed to polyweb elixir - sound just great and perfect for it.

I'm glad you found a set that your happy with. I had a guitar once that was old and seemed to sound great with a set of strings, that I normally wouldn't use on another type of guitar. So yeah i guess i would have suggested to experiment. which is just what you did. I guess it also depends on the style of music you play on it.

But yeah that's a good beater guitar. You did real good. Who cares if you could have gotten it for 5 dollars less. You seem to be real happy with it and I think you still got a great deal.

(I bet if you threw some dr. ducks deluxe strings on that guitar you'd be really amazed) Sorry i had to pipm my freshest brand. LOL

Happy playing
