Definitely shut the distortion off and work on your technique slowly, with a metronome as everyone here has mentioned. Then, turn the distortion back on and practice again on your technique with the metronome. Spend time working on your right hand technique without your left hand involved, then work on your left hand by doing legato pulloffs and let your right hand rest. Then bring them back together and work on coordination. You can do the simplest of exercises with the tv on (or youtube, whatever) and just sit there for those hours and hours doing a basic exercise. Be a machine, be perfect. Slow everything down until there are no flaws remaining, then speed it up.
And when you're finally a shredder, please apply your infinite skill towards something more worthwhile. =D I kid I kid...maybe.
