Playing a Melody in Jazz

Ok lets say I am playing Autumn Leaves with a friend of mine, we both take turns doing the melody and improvising.

The melody sounds so different when he plays it from when I play it, same notes, except a little embelishment here or there but it sounds totally different.

That is okay in Jazz right ? It sounds like the melody, it is the melody, but we give it our own little respective groove.

Just making sure it was all right O_O.
