Happy new year to all
should one learn power chords if only playing acostic guitat
AND why are they used ?
You should try to learn everything whether its an acoustic or electric. For learning purposes, just forget what type of guitar you have in your hands.
And power chords are used on acoustic also.It depends on the music you are playing.

It's a bit misleading to call them power chords when played on acoustics, though. Fifth chords is a better name.
Yea, that can be more correct.
Power as in the word, means loud and distorted.
so whats the point to them on acoustic

FIfth chords have a hollow purity that majors and minors don't have. They're used wherever that effect is required.
yeah, they sound like what they sound like.

I must say that's a great explanation you should put it in the dictionary
definitions are arbitrary.
however, etymology is nothing to argue with.
Wouldn't that depend on your definition of etymology?

I find a good example to be Eric Clapton's acoustic version of "Layla". Very nice use here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4qk_LYbo8Q&mode=related&search=

Well, I've had some requests, but I'm going to play anyway.

i like it
Power/5th chords are nice chords to add to your arsenal. Although primarily used with electric guitars, heavily distorted, they can be used on acoustic too. And, since they are really the same as playing the "bottom" of your full barre chords, they are fairly easy to pick up! 8)
