I have an Standard Strat and I'm thinking of a new pickguard. I think im gonna put a parchment one on it. but, i just want to be sure of two things. first, the regular pickguard on it is usually white, correct? not the offwhite? I'm a bad judge of color. And, I'm gonna have to get new knobs and new pickup covers too, right? i just wanna make sure before i buy a new one hehehe

On most of the strats I've seen, and on my own mex strat, the standard pickguard is a normal white, not off white.

You don't need to get new knobs, unless you want them to match with the new pickguard. Just stick your pick under the knobs and kinda push it up to loosen, then pull it off by hand.

If you want to match covers and knobs then yes, you will have to buy new ones.

One thing to realize is, everything is attached to the pickguard. You have to take everything off and put it on the new one and you have to re-adjust the p'up height. Not a big deal, but remember your p'up height so you can put it back as close as possable and tweak it from there to get the sound you had before.

yeah, i know how to do that from shielding my Squier 51. and i do want them to match.

I went to Sam Ash to do a comparison test last night, but they dont have parchment parts. so i did it online, and i like the look of parchment better

and now i can definitely tell the difference between the white and the offwhite.

I dressed up my old Squire with a new pickguard and pups. My cousin is borrowing it now, I never did get around to takin' pictures of it. :? Try and get some pictures if you can Brian. It's fun to see what it looks like before and after.

oh i will...

but! i can't find a freakin parchment pickguard! the people at GC have no idea what it's supposed to look like, and online they're $50 or $60 for a new pickguard. GC tried to sell me a Mint Green guard, telling me it was the same thing. i dont think so. Sam Ash tried to tell me "aged white" is the same, but that color just looks like someone rubbed it with tobacco. kinda nasty.

but i will definitely find myself one, cos it looks really neat. and i'll take pictures

I think the aged Mint Green is a nice color. But it's not the same as "parchment."

Sure enough, tobacco juice and strong coffee can be used to color white plastic to "antique" light brownish shades. Trial and error, though.

I got my son a Highway 1 Strat in that deep red, polished to a lovely soft sheen, with that aged Mint Green pickguard on it. I think it's beautiful. There's not much green to this pickguard, it is a creamy off-white with just the faintest hint of green. I don't know what Fender did to "age" them (UV exposure?), but it's part of the "relic" thing, supposed to look like what a '62 pickguard might have turned into by now.

One thing to bear in mind when judging colors is to try them under different sorts of light. They can look quite different under fluorescent light, incandescent light or sunlight.

good point about the light. but still, i much prefer the off-white parchment look to the mint green. i think the mint green looks to extremely non-white in contrast to the red, whereas the parchment looks only slightly off-white. i'm really not a fan of the color white, it just seems too barren and sterile for me.

i think the mint green would look really good with a brighter color, like a bright red.
