What helped me was to download a program called best practice. This allows you to alter the speed of a backing track without the pitch changing. I then made up a long sweep picking lick to fit the chords of the track and sped the track up as time went on. I found this better than metronome practice.

Another thing for me was keep my picking hand and arm relaxed. I am no expert on the technique but this helped me get my sweeps to a level where i can use them in my playing.

I used a metronome constantly and slowly work your way up from 60 bpm or so, playing perfectly. No mistakes. Then go to 65/70/75, etc. And I'd start with 3-string sweeps getting good at that before moving on up.
