hey
ive currently started flatpicking and im really enjoying it. so far ive picked up goldrush, big sandy river and lonesome fiddle blues from bluegrassbooksonline.com, so as i have never played in this style, im looking foward for some valuable tips thats gonna improve my playing. so far what im doing is alternate updown picking and resting my hand over the bridge, im thinking about starting to use a metronome today. though it seems boring to use a metronome still i should start using it as it as a great practice. so guys plz give me some more advice which is gonna helpme to become a better picker.
peace out

you have the correct picking hand position and U/D pattern. now it is a matter of practice, speed and accuracy.
I never used a metronome.
I do use CDs and try to keep up. Ricky Scaggs, Vince Gill, and Bill Monroe's stuff.
If you are bored with a metronome, get a keyboard with rhythm functionality. Playing with drums in the background is a lot COo.oOL than a metronome and it enhances the way you sound.
Many folks do not use rhythm machines to enhance their playing, but I am a firm believer in this helping you to stay in perfect time.

BTW - Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Troy Stetina have all mentioned how important it is to use a metronome or drum machine to help you keep time while practicing. And, the MI trains this as a must. Did I mention Berkley School of Music and Juliard? Need I go on?
