I read in a mag recently that he tunes his guitar a tone lower than concert standard... I take it thats to get less tension on the strings? But wouldnt he be out of tune with other instruments playing?

Nope - Capo on 2 and play your standard shapes, or play everything a tone higher; so when it says play C you play D. Easy.
