my friend came up to me today and asked if i wanted to buy his ovation....and i said i would deffinetly be interested...just because i knew i could swing an amazing deal on it. im not sure the exact model but before i start to seriosuly consider this i would like to know what these guitars are good for. they are the acoustic electrics witht the plastic backs. unplugged are they still as pure as a good acoustic. plugged are they jazz like? or still just pure acoustic. what are they really designed for? are they easy to play? fun to play?

When I was taking lessons my teacher used one during our sessions. He never plugged it in, but it sounded great. I hear they are very sturdy and sound pretty good plugged or unplugged. I've also read that they were made with electric players in mind, since the neck is very slim and the guitar is slim and comfortable to play.

Ovations can be a touchy subject. Many "purists" dislike them because they aren't made from ALL wood. I have played several at GC and I LOVE them! Most of them I played were unplugged but I plugged one into the Behringer ACX 1000 acoustic amp I want to get and MAN! The electronics in them ROCK! They are definitely better plugged in but they sound great unplugged as well.
I envy you since I wish I could find a good deal on an Ovation cutaway.
what about the tone? is it a jazz players guitar? a bluesy tone? or is it a guitar that can sortof do it all? how about in the studio is it a good recording guitar?

If he is your friend, ask him to borrow it and you can test out all your questions.
I'm not being rude, but like a lot of things, it's in the ear of the beholder and what you like might not be the same as others and so on and so forth.
Just a quick thought........
of course...i will deffinelty test it before i start to seriously consider i just want to know about this guitar a little more.

It's your basic strummers' acoustic IIRC. But I'm sure you can do other things with it :)
There are several models, I think some have deeper bowls than others, so that'll affect the acoustic sound

Most older Ovation sound thin unplugged to me, however the newer ones suond great unplugged. P.S. the backs aren't plastic they are made of Lyrachord 8) 8) Somewhere theres a forum dedicated to them.

Also, if you have ever listened to Bon Jovi or Melissa Etheridge they use Ovations religiously...Wanted Dead or Alive (Bon Jovi) & Come to My Window (Etheridge) are the 2 songs that come to mind first.
Rent the Page & Plant No Quarter DVD and you'll see (and hear) Jimmy Page playing an Ovation on many of the tunes.

My brother-in-law has an Ovation. Personally I like the sound of my cheap old Crafter better but it is a matter of taste.
He does wear a strap even when sitting. Ovations (at least the older ones) are known to want to slide off your lap easily.
Preston Reed plays one. So does Kaki King.
Preston is definately the king of bongo-guitar.
i gess it is a touchy subject, as i can see some like and some dislike the ovation....im deffinetly gunna have to give it my own shot....

You know, I have heard it said about Ovation guitars, either you love them or you hate them.
