I have figure I have caught the GAS. I have been looking at buying a new guitar, this time an electric. All of the other forum posts I have read talk about sound and feel, and if it sounds right and feels right to me then it is a good deal. But my question is about the package deals. Would it be worthwhile to buy a package deal, say the squire strat starter pack or Ibanez jumpstart set up. Or should I go in with the same money and find a guitar and amp that I like just from trying different things out?
I am addicted to the guitar, just like I am addicted to air and water.
From personal experience I started with a starter kit. I got the Squier Strat pack. Had it about a year.
I've already sold the guitar for one waaaaaaay more expensive. I still have the amp, strap, tuner and other freebies. For me it was a good deal cuz for under $300 I went electric.
It's good for starters and may sustain you until your ear and abilities warrant you to be ready for upper end gear. Only you and your pocket book will know when that time is.

hmmm, well I don't know. I've talked to many guitar shop peeps and they all say not to do that....but then again, they are in the business to sell guitars and amps too.
I got one once and the action was set so high it was very difficult to fret. Not saying they are all like that, But the way I look at it is on those deals your really just getting a bunch of cheap stuff put together in order for them to sell it for such a low price.
I think you should just go to your local guitar shop and play around with a few guitars first. Alot of times you can get a great price on a used guitar and get what you want.
Good luck
I wouldn't do that. I've never seen a package give the value for money you can get buy buying seperately. Usually the cable will crap out in a few days, the amp will be very mediocre and the strap will rip right through your flesh.
i agree with arien, if you buy that you get every thing you need, but all those things are worthless, i had a squier starter when i first started playing and couldnt wait to get rid of all the crap that fender gave me, i wouldnt buy an ibanez or fender or any other one, dont buy a starter buy everything seperate. get what you want, not get what they give you
well.... If you have been playing for awhile I see no reason to not go big, usually those are beginner packs.
Thanks Dudes!

Well I have an Epiphone Les Paul standard that I'm very happy with and a Squier Affinity Telecaster that has a nice sound to it but still can be a pain staying in tune the way I abuse it,I've played a few Fender Stratocasters and knockoffs but I'm not buying another guitar until june or so but it's all relative to your amp also and they all feel different in my hands.I found out where I go "test" that if you just sit and play you're welcome to" stay all night"
Take your time, never let someone else make the decision for you or the price tag.It is a lot of help if you stay away from the big shops if they don't have a guitarist who is selling to you.It is a bit like a garage without a mechanic.

Beginner packs are only the way to go if youre just starting GUITAR, Not just electric. I would shop around for a nice used epiphone les paul copy or such. their MUCH higher quality than a starter pack and they wont break the bank like a "real" guitar would. Goodluck whichever route you choose.

I bought seperately a guitar and amp for 298.99 exactly. It was a peavey raptor plus and a ibanez 15watt amp. I think it was a good deal. The guy even threw in some picks and a cable for free.
