What's a good technique book for moderate guitar players?

I've been playing guitar for a few years now, but mostly just goofing around. I've learned a few riffs from different songs and stuff like that, but now I want to really start improving my technique and start writing songs. I already have a metronome, now I just need a good technique book. Any recommendations?

Why not start with something like "Total Guitar" or "Guitar Techniques" magazines? TG always carries full tabs for a big song, a Grade Exam arrangement of another, and an "easy" arrangement of a third, plus its Cover Feature regularly touches on technical stuff
