I'd go with a Telecaster FMT. Comes with humbuckers but has a push pull pot so you can seperate the pickups going from bucker to single coil. Buckers will give you that classic 60's sound, single coil will be perfect for bluegrass/country type stuff and texas style blues.

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Have a look at Godin
http://www.godinguitars.com/godinwhatsnewp.htm

Something with a combination of single coil and humbucker perhaps with at trem bar.

Traditional telecasters are single cutaway solid bodies and usually have two single coils no trem. They tend to sound a bit twangy, but are really good for clean chords, not quite as versitile as a strat. I like them for their simplicity. They've been used for everthing from country to jazz to classic rock.
The one teleplayer324 described only has the shape of a trad tele. The options on that one sound pretty good if you don't think you'll need the trem.

Try out several if you have a local music center and choose the one that is right for you.

Don't just stick to the standards (Tele-Strat-LP) try others -

I recently went through a search and purchased a Dean Hardtail -

Great playing guitar - dual pickups - switchable single or humbucker.

Take a look at the Jackson guitars. I have one and I have a MIM Strat. I like both of them but I think you'll like the Jackson.

I like a strat or tele, you can get the real deal and stay well within your budget. gibsons are cool also but that would be a budget buster  bottom line is , pick what plays and sounds good to you, and get a good set up!!! if the shop you buy from won't set it up for you, go elsewhere  --the dog

Actually in Toronto I'd suggest even if you don't buy it at Twelfth Fret, take it there for the setup. Those guys know what their doing.

+1,000,000 on the Godin suggestion, they really do make a kick arse guitar for the money! :) Check em out: http://www.godinguitars.com/godindetourp.htm

Plus they're a Canadian company, so you might get one for cheap! 8)
Good luck!

I have a Fender Telecaster Nashville Deluxe, and I think it's great. Very diverse, I think you should check it out. I can also recommend the 12th fret in Toronto. Awesome store....
