Hmmm.... Wes, put that tele through a 15W Cube amp on the "Metal Stack" settting, then tell me it doesn't do metal.....

For the type of music you mentioned I would go with the Squier Standard Fat Tele. Bucker in the neck, single coil in the bridge. Same setup as used by Keith Richards in his main tele.
I love mine. I also have one of the black and chromes that have been mentioned, and a American Deluxe Telecaster FMT HH.
I keep the Fat Tele in Open G, The Black and Chrome in Open E and the American Deluxe in Standard tuning. Love them all and wouldn't trade any of them for anything else.

I'm not really into different types of electical guitars. Have never touched a Tele before.
Kinda inspired by this thread I visited my LGS (local guitar shop) today. Played around for some time on a Squire Std. tele and a Fender ditto. THe prize of the Fender was just about double of the Squire (5600 NOK vs. 2200 NOK - divide by 7? to get $). Think the Squire felt just about the same as the fender. The neck was somewhat... different , but the sound and general 'feeling' was very much the same IMO. Really nice clean sound of that single coil pickup!
For that price the Squire has to be a steal! Incredible how it is possible to write 'squire' so it almost looks like 'Fender' too... :)

Wes, you are right.
the tele is called the working mans guitar.
well man should be exchanged with person to be PC.
Many years ago, an economics teacher was lecturing on this subject and mentioned a product called "Atrixo" (a hand cream). When it hit the shops, it was put into the "Special Offers" bin at a very low price. Very few were sold. After a few weeks of miserable sales, they doubled the price - and sold millions! You can see that effect over and over in gear discussions on this board. If it costs more, it's got to be better!

Well, I can tell you that even though the Squier Tele is very good quality, especially for the very low price I paid ($200), the Fender American Tele is excellent quality. I paid about $840 for my Fender.
The tuners are much better on my Fender. In fact, they are much higher quality than my Les Paul Studio which runs about $300 more. But also, the Fender has much better pickups, saddles, pickup switch and tone and volume controls. The finish on the Fender is of a higher quality as well. The Squier looks as if it was cut by machine, the Fender looks hand worked.
So I am not putting the Squier down at all. It is a very nice guitar. But the Fender is far and away better quality.
The Fender also came with a quality hardcase, strap and straplocks. I had to buy a gig bag for my Squier.
I wish Gibson would put out a high quality product as good as Fender. They don't.

Amen. Ain't it a shame about Gibson.

I am not putting Gibson down, I love my LP. But when you consider the very high price of Gibson's, they should be better built than Fenders. But Fender is better.

I have played my Tele with all sorts of distortion, and it rocks. What I truly love about Teles is how tight distortion sounds. I don't think any guitar can get that tight. My younger brother has owned Teles for many years. That is the only guitar for him. So I have heard them plenty and was always most impressed with how great they are for rhythm guitar. They are tight.
But it will not get the heavy, creamy tone of my LP.
But a Tele can be much meaner sounding than a Strat any day. The Tele is a great Rock guitar. And everybody knows it is THE Country electric guitar.

I often toy with the idea of getting an Agile Tele. I've heard a lot of great things about them. However, I played this Mexican Tele, that belongs to a girl I used to know. It was cherry red, absolutely beautiful. It played like a dream, and sounded amazing. If I had the money I'd pick one up. I'd say go for a used MIM Tele. I liked the 10 year old one much more then the new ones.
