Trying to get the same sound this kid has...

Amp: Peavey Rage 158.......small
Pedal: Metal Zone MT-2

Problem: How do I make it all sound like what the kid is playing? He has some sort of different distortion or something... Does anyone know what I should do to get that sound? My guitar is in tune, too.

I'm pretty sure he's getting that out of something other than a simple distortion pedal...what, I don't know.

However he's doing it, it's incredibly impressive to be able to play that. :)

Sounds like its more of a tube overdrive distortion.... not regular overdrive, but powertube od, like Van Halen. If that amp is a tube amp, use an attentuator and crank it up! Try backing off on the gain a little bit ( I assume you have everything maxed) and turn up the treble + mid... It sounds Vai-ish, look on the Carvin website, I think they have Vai's amp settings, that sounds help you get in the ballpark

methinks sir that you should focus on creating your own sound.

anyways, sounds to my untrained ear maybe you need a treble booster, or maybe an EQ pedal. Those EQs work wonders.

it's usually very difficult to match an exact tone.

and frankly that video left me unimpressed. it's a great piece, but i find that style of playing to be uninspiring. were I you, I would try to find a better tone, one more unique and more "you." Make your own tone and your own style rather than trying to copy someone else

Well, I'm impressed. Although I must admit, by the end the entire song really just blured together.

As amazing as that was at his age seems everyone wants to play that style today. Thats why I think I'll stick which acoustic ( besides i'm too old to be a hard rocker) and not join the crowd.Of course he probably would be a good acoustic player too since his fingers are pretty agile

Yeh, he can play fast, but so what? It would have been way more impressive if he was playing to a blues backing track or something like that sort. Im 14, but i hate this kinda shred music, personally.

impressive at first.
I think he is playing through a synth of some kind.

Hmmm, that video reminds me I suck at that kinda stuff. It's neat some guys (let alone kids) can do it. The kid must practice quite a bit.

I dunno, I play stuff like that - its great fun :P but now that I have fewer technical barriers to my lead playing I come to realise that its all about the composing. I mean, anyone (almost) can play really technically impressive if they really want to and are determined, put in the hours etc... so once your at that point its like - well its all well n good playing someone elses stuff what can I compose myself? Thats the real test
Dont get me wrong, that was a cool song and really good playing...and that guitar! I want it! but I just feel now that (aside from the shear fun of playing) that anyones technical ability is wasted if they cant compose something themselves with it.

Sounds like a pitch shifter or harmonizer is used. Maybe a whammy?

duffmaster has it. That guy is using a harmonizer. The first effect is some sort of synth and strings effect.

I have seen this before and have trouble believeing it is real. The mix is just too darn perfect, sounds like it was recorded in a studio. If you go to Hear Here and listen to all the songs, you won't hear anything with this perfect a mix. And this is supposed to be some guy just sitting in front of his computer?? Well, if he is, he is also amazingly great at recording.

Perhaps the kid is really playing this?

Whoever is playing is very good though, wish I could play that well, but it is not my favorite style of music.

If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis
