I am basically I would say an (advanced) begginer, in as much I am comfortable playing chords open and barr can change easily between the two...
I want to go to the next level and be able to pick out riffs on my own..
I am currently attempting Yer Blues (Beatles) in E and it has a riff inbetween the vocals, now to me it seems like 2 notes and a big bend and 2 more notes in there...
I have tried to figure it out using the E minor pentatonic scale in the open position but I am not having much luck..
any tips ?

Thanks

Keith

I know a little bit about a lot of things, but not a lot about anything...
Looking for people to jam with in Sydney Oz.......

One of the things you want to try to do is listen to the surrounding chords for hints. Since it's a blues song, the "turnaround" between the verses usually ends on a V or V7 chord (B or B7 in the key of E) so there's a good chance that the last note is B, probably on the second fret of the A string.

Likewise, in a typical blues song, the turnaround gets to the V chord through the IV chord, which is A in the key of E. So try making the "big bend" from G to A and see how that goes. That may be tough in open position, so don't forget to try it at the fifth fret of the D string.

And since turnarounds usually start with the root chord, why not try a few notes from the E or E7 chord? Maybe B to E or D to E for your first two notes?

It's been a while since I've played this and I don't have a guitar at hand, so my apologies if this doesn't help...

Good luck and keep trying! With practice, this does get easier.

Peace

Here's a video by some kid on You Tube of Yer Blues. He's pretty good and looks like he's having lots of fun. You can also see what he is playing, maybe this will help.

Here's a version with Lennon, Clapton, et al. You may be able to pick up something there. Keep in mind, though, that they're playing this in Eb, not E. I have no idea if the original is in Eb and perhaps that's what's throwing you off?

I thought I looked young for my age. I clicked on that kid's profile and it says he's 21. I would have sworn by his appearance and voice he was no older than 14.
