Hi,

I have just brough a Japanease Fender Strat '68 Reisssue. I'm trying to clean it up a bit but I have got stuck on how to sort out a few problems?

1. The frets seem to have had some brass coating on them that has peeled away. How do I get the frets shinny again? Do I need to pick all the bits of and then re polish them.

Also the guitar has whay looks like a polished maple neck. How do I clean it? I assume leamon oil would tarnish the polish?!?!

2. There looks to be some tarnish on the body is the best thinkg to polish it out otr can I not get rid of it?

3. The metal work onthe tremelo and the pickups has got tarnished and a little rusty. Is it possible to make it shiney again?

I just got a '79 Strat that had been sitting in a garage for many years. Frets were oxidized so bad it wasn't playable. It has a laquered maple fingerboard. Did some online research and found a couple recommendations for Flitz metal polish - found it at a local Ace hardware store. At first I masked off each fret. But then found that it didn't seem to do anything to the fretboard finish so I finished the job without masking. I used q-tips and worked very slowly and carefully. Cleaned it up almost like new.

The Flitz did not work as well on screw heads, or the bridge - but the frets are now nice and shiney.

I recommend you be very careful about the polish contacting the plastic finish until you are sure that it is safe for your particular instrument.
