hi... im, Haz...
sorry if i post on a wrong section... i can be described as a newbie with all this...

ok... here what it is...
im using just Cheap beginners electric guitar... which is don't have any Amps... so, i convert it to my pc using 1/4 to 1/8 jack converter, then i played it through GuitarRig in FL studio...

i've been played for about 3, maybe 4 month until now... the "Undescribed" problems is.. when i plugged my Guitar to my pc... then i strum it... it doesn't make any sound... but theres Hum when i touch the Strings... and when i pick a string, no sound produced and the hum actually gone when i released my palm from the strings... after that... i checked the Output Jack as i told to on the net... those two wire were...... uhm... well.. cutted i assume(Sorry for my bad english....T_T).....

Well, The Question is... Where is the problem came from? is it from the Jack? or the Chord? nor the coils?

My Guitar information:
Cheap as hell which is TGM(Stratocaster copy) model...
3x Single coils...
well... i bought it from a friend...

Thanks for taking your time to answer my horrible Questions...

the pickup in an electric guitar produces very very little current. you need something between the guitar and soundcard.
tech guys, help me out here.

I have never connected a guitar straight to the computer... but... make sure you are plugging into the microphone jack, instead of the line-in.... or the other way around... sorry, this is just a guess.

I highly recommend getting a headphone amp. That can go between the guitar and the computer and will give you the increased amplification... I *have* done that.

Also, you can practice using headphones without the computer.

I have a Vox Amplug AC30... it is about $30-40.

I used to go directly into my PC when i tried doing some recording. As lue said try the other jack. In one I could never get much of a sound and in the other the signal was a bit to strong. You really need some type of interface to get the impedance if that's the right term correct.

But if you are just using it to hear your guitar then yea buy one of those headphone amps.

I have an Edirol UA20 audio to USB interface. It has both a mic and a guitar input, plus a level control, and it converts the signal to USB.

It has higher fidelity than the mic input on a computer, and was fairly inexpensive. I don't know if this particular model is still available, but if not, something comparable or a newer model must be.

if you plug into an amp and you do not have sound then something is wrong with the guitar or cord.
a wire could be broken. open the guitar and look at all the wires. trace their paths. and solder to the correct points if a wire is loose.

Lets see if I read that right:

He hears a bit of hum, and it changes when he touches the strings.
But there's no sound from the pickups.

Does anything change when you try the various switch positions?
Does teh volume or tone control make any difference to the sound of the hum?
