New to the forums...but needed your experience/ wisdom before I tackle this.

I hope the links works. It shows a new J5 Korean-made clone Telecaster with the output jack completely out of the guitar. Looks like the jack is wrapped in masking tape until it was the right thickness then just pressed into the guitar. There is some glue residue (very little) inside the guitar. What did they do? Am I supposed to just GLUE it back in? It will require re-soldering the wire to the jack. This was a 'VERY inexpensive' guitar I just bought while I'm stationed here in Korea. My first electric, too. I bought it wanting to use it as my experimentation platform (i.e. Frankenstein) to learn how to fix, modify and improve the qualities of an electric guitar. All my previous 20 yr experience is in accoustics. Since I am a newbie to electrics and to this forum, could you all point me in the right direction. I'm sure there is a 'sticky' thread out there with the prerequisite knowledge already posted.
FYI- my plans for the guitar: I requested a J5 clone, with the normal Fender headstock, but the pic shows what I got. Going to swap pickups to Fender Enforcer, shield and rewire, and then later, replace neck with a wider, 22 fret model. Much will follow, I'm sure. Thanks,
Ryan

Six,

1st, are you in the military? If so, thanks for all you do!

2nd, I'm not sure what they did, but you might want to look at another type of input jack. Perhaps a "football" style jack which would cover the entire hole (you just screw it into the body).

Your Holiness,
Yes, I'm an Active Duty Army Captain. I fly MEDEVAC blackhawk helicopters...the best job in the military. I could tell you all about aerodynamics, hydraulics, pneumatics and mechanical levers etc, but I couldn't unscrew a wiring diagram to save my life. That's part of the reason for jumping into this. By the time I make this heap look and sound like a real guitar, I should be very comfortable with electronics and wiring.
Do you have a reference for this 'football' style jack...an online store perhaps?
Thanks

Hey there Sixstrings,

I'd replace the jack with one like this: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/JK11

and mount it in a "football" plate like this: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/MJPF1 which will cover up that hole and be very stable.

An alternative is to mount the jack in a ferrule (like this: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/MJPT1 ) which simply plugs into the hole. However, there's no guarantee it will fit into the hole in your guitar. The football is a safer bet.

Hope that helps.

Also at that same site are wiring diagrams, and there's an in-depth article on shielding a Tele here: http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/shielding/tele.php

Cheers!

Welcome aboard, Ryan. Your images linked okay, "close enough" to see what you've got there.
And while I was previewing my reply, I saw that "Speedfingers" Slejhamer got here ahead of me, with the same links I was going to suggest.

I've placed several orders with GuitarElectronics.com, including a jack plate to replace the bent one that was on my Memphis LP copy, so I can recommend them. 8)

welcome to the forum.

another source for parts is
http://stewmac.com

they have replacement jacks and a cover plate for the jack.
it's oval, either chrome or black, and it is curved a bit to fit the contour of the guitars curve.

the jack is held in place on the cover plate with nuts. the cover plate is screwed to the guitar.
easy fix.
Ive done it.

*Second* best job in the military - the guys like me that fix your birds have the first-best job. (Navy Seahawk tech here) Also, I happen to be an electrician. :D

All joking aside, Captain, (a) THANKS! from the trenches, because I'm sure you've probably yanked a few of my shipmates out of dire circumstances...and (b) if you need any direction on soldering a new jack into that beast, myself and several other people here are solder techs by trade, and would be glad to walk you through any steps you need help with.

Thanks for doing the job you do, sir...I extend a virtual salute from the enlisted ranks. :)

Sorry guys...the photos were a bit blurry- could only get the camera to focus on the guitar, not the jack. This one is better:

This shows what I was left with. It was the 'ferrule' as you list it above. Looks like they had one that was too small as well, so that was what they wrapped in masking tape. As gentle as I tried to be, when I was unwrapping it, the other wire connection broke, so now I have nothing to play with until I get it replaced. Wanted it to be a quick fix, but now I'm starting to wonder what other shortcuts were taken. It had one blue and one white wire going to the output jack. How can I know if it is the right gauge/ type wire etc, before I go soldering it back? And on a different note, does anyone know if the ferrule type is more "authentic Tele" or does anyone even care what kind of output jack is on there?

Pilot- (Salute sharply returned) Since you offered...what are the basic do's and don'ts of soldering? I have a 30W (700 deg) fine point iron, and know I need to get Rosin core solder, and then practice a bit. What else?

Thanks for the prompt replies!
Ryan
