my new strap locks have smaller screws than my stock ones. How do I get the screws to work?

edit: they are schaller straplocks (in case that matters).

Also, is this something I can easily do myself or should I take it into the shop?

You will need longer screws. 8)

If it was easy it wouldn't be worth doing.

Fill the old holes with wooden toothpicks broken off flush with a little bit of wood glue on them. Wipe off the excess glue. Then screw in the new holder.

Actually even white elmers glue will do fine but any brand of regular yellow wood glue is best

do i let the glue dry or screw it in while it is still wet?

You can screw it in while it is still wet. It will set up nice and strong and if necessary you will still be able to get the screw out in the future.

the toothpicks that i have nearly fill the entire hole. is that right? or should it only barely take up space?

Yes, it should be a tight fit and yes, screw it in when it is wet.

After that, don't touch the strap pin for at least 24 hours. You have to let the glue set up.

If you packed the toothpicks in tight the screw should have taken a little effort to screw in so that is one indication of how strong it will be. And yes, you can give the pin a pull and see if it holds OK.

I could pack the toothpicks in tight. but the toothpick nearly fit the entire hole and there was a significant level of resistance when i screwed it in.

What happens if i pull on the pin and it just comes out?

The grenade goes off.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

If it does come lose after pulling then you may just need to add another toothpick and some more glue to make it tight. From what you described it sounds like it will be OK.
