raising/lowering bridge

when i lower the bridge do i have to loosen the slack on the strings? Also how much can i lower it without getting buzz?

You don't absolutely have to, but it will probably make life easier.

All the way, until it starts buzzing, then back off little. Sorry, it sounds silly, but your current setup will, to a large degree, determine how far you can go and you will only find that out by doing it.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

You have your answer, but it would be nice to know what type of bridge you are talking about? Such as a Tune-O-Matic, where you lower the bridge all-at-once with two thumbwheels, a wrapover intonated tailpiece which is rare, or individual saddles, where you would want to follow fretboard radius somewhat. Anyhow, greybeard's advice has you covered.

Loosening the strings, being cautious, and taking extra time, definitely makes it easier on you and the equipment. 8)

And of course, as already advised, bring it up a bit if you get buzz. Hopefully you are happy with your adjustment.
