Look around the sides of the knob and if there is a small screw loosen it and lift the knob off.

If there is no screw you should be able to pull the knob off by hand. If it won't come off slide a piece of material like a t-shirt under the knob and use that to pull it up and off.

and if that doesnt work you;ll be tempted to pry it off.
be very careful.
use a cushion between the tool you use and the guitar surface.

a slotted screw driver can work but be careful.

if the knob doesnt have a set screw, which are usually slotted and very small, then you can pull.the knob stright up to remove.
the pot is anchored so dont worry about wrecking that.
but dont twist it. you can damage the pot that way.

new knobs can be found at

I read somewhere about using a loop of material under the knob and pulling. This sounds a bit rude ;)

Biker jim may have something there... Maybe a shoe lace underneath the knob and pull up. I have changed knobs on several of my guitars and sometimes the ones that just push on are hard to get off. It is so much easier to put on and take off the knobs that have a screw on the side.

It is a small world for metal fanatics. I welcome you fellow musicians, especially the metalheads!

it doesnt have one of those screws on the side, how hard do i have to pull the knob for it to come off? They generally make a fairly snug fit onto a splined shaft. That or the set screw is what keeps the knob from just spinning around on the shaft. If you work around the edge of the knob with the shoelace or whatever trick you decide to try (I've also seen a guitar pick suggested as a prying implement), it should work up and off without damage to the guitar. (Or you.)
Try to match the splines (coarse or fine) on the pots when you get the new knobs. A few makes are a little different.

Stew-Mac and Allparts are great sources for parts (and tools, like Stew-Mac's #3515 Knob & Bushing Puller), but someplace like Universal Jems would be a lower price. Maybe not as fast on the shipping, but still pretty good. Universal Jems also has a lower price on the DiMarzio #2200 and #2201 speed knobs and bell knobs that are numbered to 11. (You know, the "Spinal Tap" kind.) http://www.universaljems.com 8)
