Hey guys.

I've always wanted a Gibson Melody Maker, and I ahve the oppurtunity to get one at a very good price.

BUT!

The guy who owns it sanded the finish off the neck. It's bare wood. Looks pretty neat, but im concerned.

Should I be concerned about it? Should it be finished with tung oil? Will anything happen to the bare wood? Am I crazy for being worried about it and I should just go get the damn thing?

What do you all think?

Mahogany neck, right? From what I've read in various places, a mahogany neck should not be left bare. If you like the naked look, a few thin coats of hard-drying gunstock oil (e.g. "Tru Oil" brand) will protect it and leave it feeling silky smooth.

+1

Definitely needs to be sealed, as mahogany is very porous. It also should have grain filler if the sealer doesn't serve double duty as filler/sealer.

I would definitely get it checked out prior to purchasing to ensure it hasn't warped at all. Must look cool, though!
