Hi there. I bought a Martin DM about 3 years ago. Its a lovely guitar which I use a lot. However, the soundhole is wearing away near the pickguard. I dont know if this happens to other people or if its through some quirk in my playing style, but can anyone let me know how to protect it from further damage. Cheers....zep

You might be able to find some thin sheets of self-adhesive clear plastic that you could cut to fit and stick on. That sort of wear happens though, probably from where you're strumming and how you're strumming. You might decrease the wear by making sure you strum on a level plane with the strings, but even so, it happens. The pick just hits there even if you're careful. The plastic might help a bit though.

Best regards.

You might wanna take it to a luthier and have him replace the pick guard with one that stretches up to the edge of the soundhole.

Keep at it for a few decades and you'll have a guitar with real character, like Willie Nelson's.
