Help please. I'm putting a new nut (from a nut blank) on a 1-7/8" neck guitar and I need to know the string spacing and the distance from the outer edges to the E and e strings. Light gauge strings-.012, .016, .024, .032, .042 and .053. I'm converting an old 12 string to 6 string. I was going to use the old 12 string nut as a guide but let's just say it didn't come off in one piece(or 15 pieces either.) Thank's for any help.

For the distance from the E-strings to the edges, Dan Erlewine recommends 1/16" in from the top of the beveled ends of the first fret.

Check out his article:

For the other strings you can get a fret spacing tool, or use this online calculator:

Personally, I'd drop 50 bucks and let a luthier do it.

Best of luck!
