I started working on the Boom Boogie lesson yesterday from Olav's site. Posting this link the other day made me realize what a great resource it is. I can only get the I & IV chords...the IV I am not ready to get to yet (I can play it but cannot change to it yet). My rhythm still sounds different than Olav's and I can't figure out why? It sounds like Olav is playing more notes than is in his tab? Plus when I am playing the IV chord I hit the low E string when playing the bass notes on the A string. Normally I would mute it with my thumb but I can't reach the 5th fret that way!

My question to all of you is should I play the E using a barre with my index (what I am currently doing) or with the index & middle? If the latter thanit will be REAL difficult to get the 5th fret on the bass notes....I TRIED!

Yes, on both the E and A chords use your index and hold a mini barre over both notes at the second fret. Play the third fret with your middle, and the notes at the 5th with your pinky.

Your thumb should be behind the neck for this, otherwise it will be very difficult to reach the note at the 5th fret with your pinky.

As far as hitting the bass E when you are playing the A chord, you just have to learn to be more precise with your picking. Try resting the side of your picking hand just behind the bridge. Keep your fingers close to the strings and make very economical short down and up strokes.

You don't have to mute a string if you don't touch it.

This is probably played with alternating down/up strokes all the way. That may be why your version sounds different. Really hard to tell without seeing what you are doing.

If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis

What Wes Said :D Also it sounds like you are holding on to the first "chord" to long. Try playing along with Olav's MP3 file, that should help you get the timing right. Keep at it

Thanks guys I appreciate the help! I figured the bass note would just take practice. It's very similar to SRV's Vaughn Shuffle played in Pride & Joy (which I can play that shuffle!)
