Ok, this one is kind of an acquired taste. The group playing is Dutch tango group "Tango Dorado". The group specialises in playing music in the style of the great Osvaldo Pugliese and the music of the legendary "Octeto Buenos Aires". The latter is interesting for guitar players, because the music is a mix between tango, modern classical music (Stravinsky anyone?) and jazz with long solos for the guitarplayer. The music comes from 1954 but was deemd so experimental that it was only performed for one year. No one ever performed it since then and with good reason: you need a very diverse group (excellent bandoneon players, excellent violin players and a hell of a guitar player) but more importantly if you want to play it you have to transcribe the sometimes extremely complicated music from a very old recording with bad sound. Tango Dorado is the only group world wide to play this music again live. The following is a recent recording of a piece called "El Entreriano" played during a concert in one of the nicest concert halls of Holland. It is not a CD quality recording (just a quick recording by the sound engineer) but you gotta love the guitar playing by jazz talent Eelco van de Meeberg. At the end of the piece it his role is to improvise as loud and fast as possible (with a little distortion even) while the rest is playing an aggressive groove underneath: we call it "organized chaos", ending altogether is the challenge here!

guitar: Eelco van de Meeberg
bandoneon & transcription: me :)
