My first attempt at a blues jam.

The drum track was created with the Hydrogen Drum Machine. I downloaded the track from the user forum on the Hydrogen website: http://www.hydrogen-music.org/forum/?action=show_thread&thread=362&fid=8&page=1
Much thanks to "hansfong" and "paulcooke".

The bass, acoustic rhythm, electric lead and harmonica were all recorded by myself. Please, let me know what you think. I know I need to work on my timing  . Don't be afraid to tell me what you really think

overall: good.
recording: muddy.
energy level: needs improvement.
degree of difficulty: pretty high.

I like your harp work. your instrument playing is decent. I would have liked to hear more energy coming out of you.
seems like you held back.....well, I understand some of that. it is hard to let loose and keep an eye on the recorder at the same time.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you tell me what you mean when you say the recording is "muddy"? Is it the quality of the recording you are referring to or the levels of the mix?

It didn't sound muddy to me per se. I noiticed that everything was pretty well panned dead center. If you widened out the panning a bit it might help to give each instrument their own space. There's nothing wrong with panning a solo instrument slightly to the side. It might not have been an option at this time but a bass line would have been nice to fill out the bottom end. Otherwise, the playing was fine. Nothing fantastic but easy to listen to. Like the mouth harp. Keep it up.

I hadn't thought about panning. I'll try that on my next recording and see how it goes.

Oh, and there is a bass track. I guess it just might me a little muddy

ya. panning is good. separate some of your tracks and the result will sound thicker, wider, more headroom.
you can copy your vocal to a new track. pan one left, one right and delay the start of one track by a nano second and you have some fullness. I like guitar off center left and second guitar or instrument off center right. play around with what you have.

Is there any convention when it comes to panning? Like, is lead guitar always panned one way or the other? And is it a good idea to pan drums or bass or should the rhythm section be equal to both sides?

I would think there are some standards, but hey, it is your recording.
a lot times what I think about while mixing is being on a stage. the musicians are laid out.
drums center, bass to one side, vox middle, backup vox side and side, guitars side and side.
listen to the mix on CDs. what do you hear.

there are many ways. try and then decide.
