If you are singing other people's song, do not try to imitate their voice. Everyone always does this without knowing it, and it wont work.
Sing with emotion above all. I often catch myself (with singing) trying to force it. It doesnt sound good. You just gotta let it flow. Doesnt matter what emotion you feel with singing (usually), you just gotta feel it. Emotion is the main thing lacking in a lot of music today.
