Thought it was time to bite the bullet and actually record myself playing.

Its lesson 4 "True Blue" from Blues you can use (great book).

Recorded the rhythm first and thought it was OK but when I recorded the solo it sounded terrible, the timing was so much worse than I thought. 10 or so takes later it does sound better but still needs some work.

Any comments or tips on improving are appreciated.

Thanks,

Marty.

Very good first recording!

Yeah, it seems the timing could be improved. You maintain the timing for the first measures but some notes are slightly delayed. The bendings are correct, you achieve the goal note perfectly. Very nice!

On the recording, it is possible you must reduce the volume of the rhythm track, sometimes the 'bass' is over the guitar. Perhaps the guitar is also loud but your guitar tone is very good! Probably other members will give you better advices in this part.

Congrats Marty! 8)

Hi,

Great job, for a first recording. I'll have to dig out that BYCU book and do some more work on it...

Make sure you keep it to look back on later. Even better, if you still have one, keep one of the earlier bad takes too. I had a couple of my first recordings, especially ones of really REALLY bad singing which I've now lost, and wish I still had. It's always good to have something to compare your progress with. Later down the track when your progress slows down a bit, it's great to be able to remind yourself how how far you've come. So a track that's worse than that one would be good to have!

Good work.

Chris

Thanks for the comments guys.

I was actually suprised at how different it sounded when listening to the recording than what I was hearing while playing.
This is going to be a great tool to accelerate my progress I think.

Chris, actually i didn't keep any of the previous takes. It was kind of "thats worse than I thought" (press delete).

I'll keep that in mind, it would have been interesting to compare take 1 to take 10.

Absolutely! I started to do it following an advice of another member and it is great help. And not only because you must effort to follow the rhythm, as you said, you can also listen the recording with attention.

All been said but yes a very fine first. Much better to play the right notes than try and rush it and throw some duff ones in. Keep up the good work.

good first effort.
I have a feeling this will accelerate your growth. listening to one self does that.
sure the timing is off. sure some notes have not enough soul...that all comes in time.
you are well on your way in achieving that.
