here is another old song. it is one of my top ten favorites.
I put a SM57 in front of a 1958 Gibsonette amp (10" Jensen speaker) then used my trusty strat plus.
I am singing so cover your ears.
mystery train (Scotty Moore style)

this sort of is a work in progress. I not positive about the mastering, the mix, and even some of the tracks.
I know I can do better; a mistake free track is impossible. grrr. I like the vintage quality I am hearing.
feedback is most welcome.
That's a top 10 song for me as well, db. One of my all time faves. 8)
Great groove you've got going; I love the tone of the guitar in the little solo. It's almost human, like you're scatting.
One suggestion re. the mix: I like the drums for that kind of song drier, more staccato, almost a martial feel. Makes all the other funky stuff stand out even more.
That said, I really liked it. :)
Don
I like that!
"Scotty Moore Style" is a high standard, but you can pull it off!
In the little "train whistle" fill, there's something that needs tweaking about the tone, but I can't put my finger on it and say how to do it. It's somehow just a little abrasive to my ear, coming out of a Mac laptop speaker.
Great playing! :D
"A cheerful heart is good medicine."
the lick has two things that bug me: the first set of double stops is bent a tad high and I took the reverb off. hence the abrasive tone.
dry/staccato on the drums? not sure what you mean.
thanks for the replies.
thats a catchy tune there dogbite, and a top class recording!!!
"I like to play that guitar. I have to stare at it while I'm playing it because I'm not very good at playing it."
Noel Gallagher (who took the words right out of my mouth)
Nice Job! Great tone, course I'm listening through a pair of $120 powered Audiotechnica computer speakers. :?
"Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard,
grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em."

Like the song, and dig the earthy "live" feel you've got going there. 8)
"The only way I know that guarantees no mistakes is not to play and that's simply not an option". David Hodge
Sounds like you did that at Sun Records back in the 50's 8) Thats a great sound. lead guitar and vocals need to come up a bit in the mix. Using the SM57 was a good choice, not using a mic on a 58 Gibson amp is probably against the law in several states  BTW was that reverb from the amp? back in 74 I got to use a old gibson amp for about 6 months, it had a awesome reverb :note2:
hey dog thanks for the comments. I decided to redo the vocals...I notice now and late that I am just a bit late. I also am going to redo the solo. those double stops are off and shrill. I will then bring them up in the mix.
yeah, Sun Records. I have the three disc set and they inspired me. I did not do the original Blue Flames version. I always liked Scotty Moore's version.
I ran the guitar into my delay before the amp. I used a single repeat (echo). it worked great for the electric ry part. I also had the same setup for the solo, but the echo wrecked things. I put some vintage single plate reverb on it, but in the end took that off. hence the shrillness. the reverb mellowed it out.
so now I will just redo the solo and clean it up. I did sveral thopusand takes on that lick I made up. it's burned in my head and fingers. I would like to improve it but I am 'trained' now and will not be alble to thi nk on the fly when the red button is pushed.
these old amp are truly cool. mine breaks up very early. a local harp player saw it on a gigonce and offered me $$$. I said no. he wanted to know where I lived. I gave him a fake address. people kill these for these. really???
Very cool dogbite, I actually love your solo as it is.
thanks jase. I hope you like the new one I just posted.
hey all. after listening to my original song post I went back into the studio. I came upon the first take on Mystery Train that I did a few weeks ago. I made it quickly to get the idea down . well, quickly was a whole weekend. there were a few mistakes on it and I ended up trying to re record from scratch. one effort was better technically, but sounded un energetic. the next try was better. that's what I posted when I began this thread.
I re posted Mystery Train. I used the very first recording. the throw away one. it sounds the best, rough as it is.
for me, it has the right feel, sound, mix and energy. I can't believe it.
dang. recording is hard.
I really like Version 2.0!
"A cheerful heart is good medicine."
I really like Version 2.0!
