I've got to admit there were parts of your work that left me cold, and parts that I thought were good.
What I did notice is you spent a fair amount of time with the 3rd and 4th fingers of your picking hand scrunched up, which makes it difficult to relax the hand when you're playing. At the end, those fingers were stretched out, and you should work on getting that more relaxed hand position throughout.

It's not a technique thing, it's an emotional thing. If you listen to what you played, you'll notice there are places where you put in more "oomph" and there are places where you just played some notes and moved the slide around.
Keep at it, nobody succeeds without a lot of hard work.

Derek,
I like the ideas you have, but I feel like your technique is lacking a little. To be more precise, I feel like some of the notes aren't being hit - the slide isn't in the right place, etc, so it is slightly out of key. I noticed this on another recording you posted as well, though didn't get a chance to comment on it. I think if you can nail that down, it will sound a lot better, and then you can work from there.
Also, I'm a huge fan of Trucks. I recently got to see him when he was touring with Clapton and it was the greatest concert I've been to. The man puts so much energy into that slide, it's incredible.
when I play slide blues I usually end up swaying and stomping my foot. I get bent over and squint my eyes.
it's like I'm always seeing something in the distance, but I ain't never getting there.
you don't play the blues. the blues play you.
Watch this video several times. What do you hear :?:
Thats right! He keeps a rhythm going
Yes!! he keeps it simple...Less is more 8)
Whats that?...Why yes It has a steady beat
My advise is that you should listen to all the acoustic blues you can get your hands on. Really listen and more importantly FEEL the music.
Play along with them...most of those guys are dead and wouldn't mind
Keep on posting your progress :D
