The problem I have with audacity and I have had it for a while and that is when I record something I get a delay in the sound. I will play something onto it and the sound bounces back a couple of milli-seconds later. This is OK when I'm just laying down one track as I can turn the speakers to my pc down but it becomes a real problem when trying to record over a previously laid down track as I have to have the volume up on the pc.
When I first installed the software it worked fine then from out of the blue this started to happen.
I have reinstalled it thinking that might help but no.
I have ended all programmes running in the background to cut down the usage of the CPU and that didn't help.
I'm running windows xp with GB ram on a Pentium 3

Presumably your soundcard settings are ok - I had Audacity looping the mic input on my new pc unti I ticked a box to stop it feeding the sound back into itself.

Yep, there are options for software and/or hardware 'playthrough' in the settings somewhere - disable them both and it won't play back the track you're recording.
Question.
Is Kristal Audio Engine the same thing as Audasity as I'm thinking of giving that a try instead ?

Same kind of thing, but a few more features and a little less basic. Then Reaper is another step up, then you get on to the ones you have to pay for. (Or at least, that's how it looks from a tinkerer's perspective. I've spent a grand total of about 30 minutes on each of them except Audacity :))
Hi Rodders
I recommend you to test Kristal Audio Engine together with the ASIO2 driver Asio4All.
I have had similar problems with Audacity that the forced me to use another recording SW. KAE is more advanced than Audacity and has a higher learn-in threshold.
But I like KAE as it supports ASIO2 driver ( gives lower latency/delay problems), has a better handling of VST FX plugins and has a user interface that is more similar to professional recording SW.
