Microphone Questions

The built-in condenser mic actually gives surprisingly good results - I used mine at guitar orchestra rehearsal a few weeks back in a fairly large room and it recorded the sound from all 20 guitars quite clearly, including the pianissimo sections, so that I could learn the repertoire.

I've had no problems using a standard 1/4" mic cable attached to a 3.5mm adaptor feeding into the line in/ mic socket - check out "Sold Out" on my Reverbnation page.

Also you said you use the input for a mic, does the mic you use require phantom power or is it one with a battery?

I've had a br for nearly a year, I have no prior recording experience and would place myself very much a newbie in terms of recording. I do have the sony mic and these are just my thoughts.

I use the mic for recording acoustic(i cant sing :( ). The advantages for me using the sony mic are that it allows easier positioning making it easier to get the mic close to the guitar (about 4 inches from the 12th fret, thats my favourite) for recording. I'm not in a position to give an opinion for vocals.

For recording vocals off the onboard mic I think you need to try and get it pretty close to your mouth.I've heard users get great results from the onboard mic, one user was using for vocals the Mc p05 for nylon effect . I would never have tried that as I thought it was an effect for recording a nylon strung guitar. He was getting good results for recording vocals on the onboard mic. It really is a great bit of kit but youve got to be prepared to tweek the settings and try and learn as much as possible , the more you learn about it the better it gets.

I get so much use out of my br, not just recording but the ability to import jam tracks to play along,slow down and loop. The amp modules and effects are very neat to.

Neither - this is just a standard dynamic mic. Standard 1/4" jack at the end of the cable through an adaptor into the 3.5mm input and select "LIN" as the input source instead of MIC. Set your Input level and away you go.

Okay, I'll have to check my music shop for a cheap one and see if they have one. I'm kind of microphone retarded, so I just want to make sure what I'm looking for.

Yep - and you can get the 1/4" -> 3.5 mm converter for pennies from just about any shop that sells headphones

Joe, where you have the mike sitting in the room can make a tremendous difference in what frequencies of sound the mike is picking up. Hard walls act like a mirror to sound waves, and as they get reflected around the room the sound waves collide. Sometimes these collisions will work to amplify or attenuate a certain frequency, resulting in oddities of the sound picked up by the mike.

Try shifting the BR left/right/up/down a few inches at a time until you find a spot where things sound better when you record.

Moonrider, I was actually recording in a small area so the sound may have been bouncing around and that may be why I was getting the hollow sound, I'm not too sure about audio dynamics. But with the BR, you can't really set it up high low, or anything like that as I don't think they make a "mic stand" for it so to speak.

Its for sale in the UK for £60, a quick conversion to dollars makes that about $86. Im sure it will cost less than that in the US . It is priced very near to what Sony sold theres at, although I have a Sony (well it says Sony on it)I paid less than £10 on ebay.

I actually was looking through my old video gear and found a Sure dynamic mic in a mic bag that I didn't know I had, but I haven't used it yet. I've got to get an XLR cable, I've already got the converters, they were in the bag as well. I forgot that I used them to get audio into my old camera when I was first starting to produce a Pro Wrestling TV Show about 10 years ago.

I just bought one on Ebay, the Sony one that is, I can't see paying $80 for essentially the same thing, but it didn't work. It was only $6 after shipping. I'll be getting the cables today to find out if it works soon.
