G'day all,

My mother board has on board sound, would my recording experience greatly improve with this card....

http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=205&product=14189

My set up is Guitar into Vamp2 into Line in on (onboard soundcard) and recording via Audacity.

I have recored successfully before by playing guitar into Vamp2 into my amp and a small (pc) microphone sitting on the floor next to the amp but I thought it might be easier to go straight into the souncard.

Thanks
Keith

I know a little bit about a lot of things, but not a lot about anything...

Don't waste your money on another consumer audio card. The Audigy card are overrated. Their specs are fudged to look good but are not accurate in any way. The truth is that it is difficult to get better than 90dB of dynamic range, the claimed 120dB is a stretch of truth. Their 24 bit input gets dithered down to 16 bit before it ever gets to disk.

Stick with the card that you have. Download Kristal Audio Engine and asio4all and you should be good to go. Go visit KVR audio forums for some free VST effects.

If you are set on getting a "better" card go and buy yourself an M-Audio Audiophile2496. It's a good card with a good track history. Good asio drivers and plenty of users to get tips from.

I agree with Hueseph

I am using V-Amp2 into (via a mixer) a low cost built in soundcard.
Normally I use 16 bit / 44.1 khz quality on my recordings
And it is givin me the sound quality I need for my basic recordings.

But remember that max line level out from the V-Amp is higher than the max line level that a standard sound card can handle , so you need reduce the output from V_Amp to avoid clipping in soundcards analog to Digital converter circuitry

Hi Keith

Yes, thats the problem when combining "semi-Pro" and "Pro" sound equipment with standard PC sound cards.
You want as high level as possible in to the soundcard to get the best signal to noise ratio, but you must avoid (at any cost) clipping in the A/D converters.

The way I do it , is to use my ears.
I listen with head phones on the PC soundcard output and play hard on the guitar and increase output level from V-Amp until I can hear an added distorsion.
Then I back of the V-Amp level a bit.
You need to do this check for all different V-Amp settings and all the strings, as sound levels can be very different from the strings in the different Amp/Speakers settings.

I have the Audigy SE and it greatly improved my computers sound. Dell Integrated sucks hard, as does their integrated video. Personally, I'm very happy with my upgrade to the SoundBlaster, and would highly recommend it.

Who needs a signature?
I mean really...
It's almost always lyrics...
or a cliche...
or garbage about me...
Lets just save YOU from the pain, ok?

For the price of the audigy you can buy a 2496. One is specifically designed for recording with true 24 bit 96kHz recording capability and rock solid ASIO drivers that allow for extremely low latency. The other is designed for consumer listening, gaming, and movie watching.

audigy/creative cards are a great upgrade from most all onboard cards but, i would steer clear of them if you want to use your PC for recording.

I second the M-Audio 24/96, i have one and it's a great card for $100
