My son is 12 years old and he loves taking samples and putting them to drum rythems and making songs out of it. I dont know if any of you are familiar with the old Mtv Music Generator program but he used to use that for this purpose.

I am wondering what software and what I would need to let him do the same thing but in a more professional manner. The Mtv thing had alot of limitation and was kind of toyish. Now that he is about to be a teen I would like to set him up with a way to make this sampled music and learn at the same time. Sorry, I am not sure what that type of music is called.

If you understand kind of what I am talking about, any suggestions?

Jim

Geoo,

I know what you mean but I don't know the name. I have a friend who's kids do that stuff all the time. I'll check with him if no one else here can help.

The cheapest one would be Band In A Box (about $60). I do have a free one at home. I'll post it when I get home.

Reason Adapted (a "light" version of Reason) that comes free with some mid-range sound cards that would be ideal for this as well. So if you happen to be looking for a new sound card . . .

The name of the program is called ReBirth. It is a former Propellerhead product (the makers of Reason 3.0) that is not being supported anymore. The download file is in ISO form I believe and needs to be burned to a CD as an "image" (not a picture but a CD image). I have only played with it a little bit but it's not bad...heck it's FREE!

Wow, thanks guys. Is there generally any hardware involved other than a computer or is it pretty much all software in this world? I am thinking I will buy him a cheap but decent computer (Dude, maybe he'll get a Dell) and one of these software packages. I asked him what he thought about getting back into that today and he was pretty much foaming at the mouth.

....wait.....

Go and try the test download of Super Duper Music Looper

http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/showproduct.asp?pid=535

It's says kids but I use it like a video game on my laptop sometimes. You can add any loop, record yourself or your guitar, etc

You can download the Xpress version here:

Also take a look at Acid Music Xpress although it's nowhere near as fun:

then you can download some loops from http://www.acidplanet.com

You might check out Ableton Live...I used Acid at one time, until I discovered Ableton - there's a really cool video somewhere of John Scofield's rhythm guitarist demoing Ableton using guitar and a midi controller...Fruity Loops, now know as FL Studio is pretty good and comes with a lot of samples, and the cheap version is about $50.

I tend to use Reason and Ableton the most...I haven't touched Acid for a while, though I hear the new version is pretty good and catching up with Ableton. I actually got a tune I wrote with FL Studio placed in a corporate video a few months ago.

And that SuperDooper Looper is on the plate for my son...

I have Acid Music Studio and I have to say, for the price it's a very good program. It supports VST plugins and works very well with loops.

I suggest also getting a midi controller for added fun and ease of use. I use M-Audio 49e Keystation however this is an ENTRY level keyboard. If you think the person might stick with it then look for something he could grow with.
