I was just wondering, since guitar players play through both normal guitar amps AND bass amps, what would be the advantages of playing through a bass amp compared to a normal guitar amp? I'm assuming that it might have a good clearer low end (which would be good for hard rock and metal) compared to an average guitar amp, is this true? and what are some pros and cons for guitarists using a bass amp?

What you are probably referring to is fender bassmans and stuff like that.

Actually, the amplification sections of guitar and bass amps are very similar. It's the speakers that usually vary. Bass speakers are heavier, and better for lower frequiencies, while guitar speakers are lighter and better for high frequiencies. However, a lot of guitar players will use bass amp heads with a guitar cab because of the distortion that they can get from the head. In fact, i've done it myself with an old traynor bass head that I have. However, the traditional bass amp for guitar players is, of course, the fender bassman.
