Well, I couldn't wait. I made a 1 X 12 cab for my Valve Junior Head. I had some old pieces of plywood in my basement and a Fender special design speaker laying around so I did it yesterday.

It is a box that is 18" wide by 20" tall and 10" deep. It is open backed. The construction is 3/4" plywood all except for the board the speaker is mounted to. That is OSB as I ran out of plywood. I bought a 1/4" phono jack at RS and some little rubber feet at my local hardware store as well as a switch plate to use as a jack plate. Right now it is rough and I need to finish / cover it. For now I'm going to sand it and fill the holes and cracks and paint it flat black. This all needs to be done if I cover it anyhow. At a later time I may buy some covering material.

The speaker is a 12" Fender special design 4 ohm speaker that is rated for I think 75 watts.

Bottom line is it sounds great!

I've had a half-built cab in my basement for ages into which I plan to put a 12" Fender speaker that came out of country singer Terri Clark's Deluxe Reverb. Her guitar tech lives here, and he pulled it out because it was making a scratchy sound. I saw it thrown out behind the store and carried it home. (I'm a curbside scavenger and dumpster diver from way back.) It does sound scratchy if you play it loud, but sounds great with a 5-10 watt amp running through it. Got to finish up that cab.

Wow great clips.

Is it just me or do the crunch samples sound like a Les Paul is being used? All the other samples sound like single coil guitars but for some reason the crunch ones sound like humbuckers

Those clips were all played with a Squier '51 which has a humbucker at the bridge. But those were not the stock '51 pickups. Those were replacement pickups from Guitar Fetish I believe.

Way to go building your own cab TRGuitar

They say this amp loves cheap speakers. I have tried it through Celestion Vintage 30s, G12T-75s, Celestion Goldback, and Eminence 125 speakers, sounds good with them all, but different through each speaker. This amp has great tone.

You cannot go wrong with this amp. :D

I finished it yesterday. It doesn't look bad either. I think I'm gonna keep it as is, no need to cover it. It is flat black and I made a grill cloth out af a piece of silver metal screen. I get a little vibe in the cabinet if I really crank it up loud. I think that might be the metal screen. It's hard to isolate cause at that volume everything in the house is vibrating also. The cabinet is solid as I assembled it with wood screws and finishing nails but only after appyling liberal amounts of wood glue to all the joints. It is open back but I have an upper and lower brace in the back, there is an opening in the middle. I still need to stop at the hardware store and get a handle to carry it. It looks rugged and ready for the road. I just need to get some stencils and spray paint "TRGuitar" on it or something. Now it's time to do some playing.

Lopo Line is coming out with loaded cabs with Vintage 30s. Those will be sweet. They are built well and the price is great. I really like mine.

$299 for the 2x12 looks like a deal.

I'm thinking Burgundy with Oxblood would look good with that Epi

Lopoline

So many choices.... Thanks for all the help GN!

I fixed that link. When you post a link, first type "" without the quotes. Then, type in whatever title you want to give the link. At the end of the title put your end tag "" without the quotes. The link will appear as your title only.

The Lopoline 1 X 12 I ordered is very nice. It is very solid contruction with metal corners, a good strong handle, and big rubber feet. It's pretty heavy too. I got a closed back and am very happy with it. The grill pulls out, if you look close you can see little pull tabs at the bottom. The grill is held in by velcro at the four corners. This is why you can buy additional grills in other colors. The speaker (s) mount in from the front, they provide the screws (on empty cabs), takes 5 minutes to put a speaker in. The jack plate is already mounted with two 1/4" inputs.

The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the wiring. It was OK, but fairly lightweight. I had an old blown Fender amp a friend gave me, I used the Fender wiring which is very heavy.

I ordered black tolex with the oxblood grill for my EVJ head. It is a pretty good match, not perfect, but pretty close. I put an Eminence 125 from my HRD in it. Sounds very good, much more Fender tone than the Celestion Vintage 30s in my Avatar cab. I personally like closed back cabs for tighter bass. Closed backs are a little more directional, where an open back sounds fuller in most people's opinion.

But I love tight bass.

I sent off an e-mail today to Lopoline. They offer a larger 1 X 12 with the Vintage 30. I want to use this with my Marshall DSL401 as an extension. But I need a 16 ohm speaker for the Marshall (has an internal 16 ohm speaker and will operate at 8 ohms min. impedence). They do offer the 16 ohm in the smaller cabs, just wanted to see if I can get it with the larger 1 X 12. The small 1 X 12 will not fit under my Marshall amp, but is the ideal size for the EVJ head.

These Lopoline cabs are not as nice as $600 Marshall cabs you see at the music store. But they are really very nice and sound good.

Came up with a vinyl covering for the speaker cabinet I made ... a $3 one! Black duct tape. Doesn't look half bad and hey! It's duct tape! You gotta like duct tape!

Well, I revamped the design first. I reinforced the baffle board .. A.K.A. the board the speaker is secured to. I made it more a part of the frame. I then front loaded the speaker. It is more secure and solid with the unit. There is no vibration or rattle now. It sounds like $1,000,000.00 but cost like the $3.00 worth of duct tape that covers it. :D If you want to know where the wood for the cab came from and you are a fan of the movie "A Christmas Story" just ask me. I promise you won't shoot your eye out.

Whenever I hear of someone doing something odd or cool with duct tape I always think of the Red Green Show. Am I the only one?

Well, it's not Red Green inspired but ....... you know the movie the Christmas Story? The Major Award? The leg lamp? Well, my daughters fiance ..... ex-fiance now  got me a Christmas present the year before last. That particular movie is a favorite of mine. My present was a wood crate marked "FRAGILE" and full of straw and packing material and containing one "leg lamp". Yes, very funny at the time. I used the ply wood from the crate to make my speaker cab. The fiance is gone .... lucky I don't kick his arse .. had the date set, hall rented and all ...... Well, the little girl has a new beaux ...... and this one's dad is a New York State Assemblymen. Things work out for a reason. I love my new speaker cab! I think the new "potential" son in law is OK too. Rock on! Long live duct tape!

This is the cabinet that I built for my VJH. The upper section has two Vintage Jenson 6" x 9"'s, for blowing harp and the lower section has a 10 and an 8 that I use with guitar. Actually I leave the 6x9's plugged in all the time because I'm at home and don't need the volume.

The vinyl has been tightened up since that pic was taken.[/img]

Hey Bandit, great to see you!

I really like that cab of yours. 6x9" speakers are an old standard for radios and such that really work well. Hard to find new ones that aren't coaxial speakers for car stereos.

So did anyone see a release date for the Epi cab? I too like the look of it and I've had the head in my wishlist while I hunted down a cab. If that thing is as cheap as we all hope, I'll be all over it! :)
