hey all, i need help. im looking for a smal tube amp, 5-30 watts (i live in a condo, so i cant be TOO noisey). ive heard great things about the fender blues jr and epi valve jr. what im looking for is a classic rock tone. imagine the lead guitar on CCR's "heard it through the grapevine", and thats what i'd love to achieve. i have a hard time finding places that stock enough of these small amps to do side by side comparisons.
any suggestions for a small amp? thanks, all.

Dan

A Kustom Tube 12A practice amp should work well $99

i'm in the same boat myself, so i'll point you in the direction of the three i'm currently looking at:

Epiphone Valve Junior Combo: http://www.thomann.de/ie/epiphone_valve_junior_epajr_gitarrencombo.htm
Peavey Royal 8 Valve King http://www.thomann.de/ie/peavey_royal_8_valve_king.htm
Ibanez ValBee http://www.thomann.de/ie/ibanez_valbee_gitarrencombo.htm

they're all 5watt amps, but should be suprisingly loud from what i'm told

This is my signature. Fear it.

Don't forget the Fender Champion 600: http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_champion_600.htm

BTW, Mordeth, it is 4€ cheaper for Spain... the VAT? :?:

That Kustom isnt really a tube amp, right? Else Behringer AC and Masrshall VS are tube amps too...

I have the Epiphone Valve Junior and I am VERY pleased with it... It's really nice sounding, I bought the Electro Harmonix Holy Grail as well as the Danelectro E.Q and am very happy with the sound I can get out of it. With that set-up I can get a surprising amount of tones out of it, though I would consider it really good for someone looking for more of a bluesier sounding amp.

5 watts sounds like it's small, but it is not a practice amp: I can't fully crank it to 10 when people are at home... usaully anything past 5 will bug people.

Dunno really, just going by the ad. says it's got a 12AX7 Tube preamp. Hybrid? whatever, it's only $99
It's for bedroom practice so i figured to go the cheap route.

Hard to find good tube or tubelike tone under $100

+1 for the EVJ combo, I have the head version and really like it. The new combo's are said to be hum reduced. You can't go wrong at this price for a tube amp. 5W and all your ears can stand, I can't really play mine with volume at more than 12 o'clock in my practice room and I have no neighbours to offend.

+1; nice warm sound and didn't fart out like I was expecting (though some reviews say it does.)

Just not loud.

Quite a few companies have such hybrid amps, but the tube is more for show then anything else. As for EVJ vs Ibby valbee, I personally really dislike the tiny speaker in the Ibanez. The stock EVJ combo speaker isn't the best ever but it's really a step up from the Ibanez one.

For the Euro-mob, Thomann have their own version of the Epi ( http://www.thomann.de/de/harley_benton_ga5.htm ) but with the addition of a tone knob - and only 98 €.

I have the Peavey - nice little amp.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
